Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing that originated in India more than 5000 years ago. Its philosophy uses a theory of the panchamahabhutas or five great elements- ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements describe how our bodies function and how we can be in alignment with our true nature and the rhythms of the natural world.. From these five elements come the doshas which the human body is a combination of.. Vata is the fusion of ether and air, it is responsible for all movement in the body including every breath we take, pulsations of the heart and nervous system conduction.. Pitta is comprised of fire and water, it expresses itself as transformation in the body, this includes digestion, absorption, assimilation, body temperature, and metabolism. Kapha is the combination of water and earth, it is the cohesion and lubrication that holds the body together, including the bones, cartilage, synovial fluid, and water for all bodily systems.
Each person is a unique combination of the doshas which brings a range of attributes and tendencies into the equation for health and well being of body-mind-spirit.
As an ayurvedic practitioner I determine your individual constitution(prakruti) by looking at your physical, mental, spiritual, and social patterns. Being aware of how all these aspects affect your overall health is essential to finding the root cause of imbalance. In this way we can restore balance by removing the causative factors and integrating recommendations tailored to your unique requirements.
Ayurveda offers practical information for people of all ages interested in maintaining their overall health. It is also helpful for individuals with specific health concerns whether they be lifelong, off and on, or a more recent phenomenon. As a holistic system ayurvedic recommendations typically include a combination of diet, herbal formulations, lifestyle, meditation, and exercise tailored to ones unique constitution.
The ayurvedic health consultation includes a detailed health intake to determine your unique constitution(prakruti), which is a combination of vata, pitta, and kapha according to ayurvedic philosophy. Based upon this and your specific health concerns, individualized recommendations will be offered using a combination of diet, lifestyle, herbs/herbal formulas, yoga, exercise, sound therapy, and bodywork.
